How to Keep Kids Engaged During Sunday School (Without Losing Your Voice or Your Mind)
4/5/20252 min read

Let’s keep it real: Sunday School is not for the faint of heart.
You’re showing up early, prepping your lesson, praying for focus—and then BOOM. The kids walk in, full of energy, snacks, and side conversations. Your outline suddenly feels like a suggestion, and that cute craft you planned? Let’s just say it didn’t exactly go as planned.
If you’ve ever ended a class wondering, “Did they even hear anything I said?”—you’re not alone. But the good news? Engagement doesn’t have to mean chaos, and you don’t need to shout to be effective.
Here’s how to keep the room glowing and growing—without burning out:
1. Switch Up the Format
Kids get bored fast, especially if every lesson looks the same. Instead of just reading a passage and talking about it, try:
Acting out the story with costumes or props
Movement-based games that tie into your scripture (Simon Says w/ Fruits of the Spirit? YES please!)
Group discussions or breakout questions for older kiddos
Interactive storytelling where the kids help finish the story
📝 Try rotating your teaching style every 15 minutes to keep things fresh.
2. Use Visuals, Props & Hands-On Activities
Children learn through seeing, touching, and doing. A simple object can turn your Bible lesson into something unforgettable. Try:
A mustard seed when talking about faith
A flashlight when teaching on being the light of the world
Lego blocks when talking about building faith
🎨 Bonus tip: Let them draw or create during the lesson—it helps them focus and remember!
3. Add Call & Response or “Repeat After Me” Cues
Kids LOVE rhythm and repetition. Try phrases like:
“God is good!” ➡️ “All the time!”
“Who’s the King?” ➡️ “Jesus!”
“I am…” ➡️ “Loved. Chosen. Bold. Blessed.”
This gives them a sense of unity and helps them stay locked in. Plus, it’s adorable.
4. Plan… But Stay Flexible
Sometimes, God will shift the whole atmosphere mid-lesson—and that’s okay. If your students are struggling to sit still, take a brain break and pray. If they’re emotional, be present. If something flops, it’s not failure—it’s feedback.
Let the Holy Spirit be your co-teacher.
5. Reward Participation & Progress
You don’t need to bribe them—but let’s be real, a good incentive never hurt nobody. Try:
Kingdom Bucks (they earn them and spend them on small prizes or snacks)
A Kingdom Passport where they stamp lessons completed
Shoutouts, certificates, or a “Glow Getter of the Week” wall
💡 Recognition motivates. Make it fun. Make it meaningful.
Kids don’t need a perfect teacher—they need a present one. One who sees them, listens to them, and creates a space where they feel safe, valued, and LOVED by God. Your energy sets the tone, and your glow lights the room. Keep going, sis. You’re making more impact than you realize.
